TRYON |
||
| 1885 | Chartered by the State
Legislature. A second charter was given in 1920 when the name, "The City
Tryon" was changed to "Town of Tryon," to more accurately reflect the
population which is well under 10,000.
In scale, the town of Tryon has a radius of only three quarters of a mile, or a rough area of only 1.7 miles. When the original town was laid out, the ideal plan was for a center and out from that, a circle. In the center of the circle was a large replica of a toy horse; a reference to both the Tryon Toy Makers enterprise that won international recognition for its toys, and to the active equestrian activity of Tryon and the eventual founding of the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club, still active today. At an elevation of 1067 feet above sea level, the town of Tryon could be considered to be in the foothills of the mountains, but the surrounding countryside is rugged and steep in places and the town, itself, is a meandering and multi-leveled adventure. |

| Referred to as "An Unspoiled Paradise" in Azure-Lure: A Romance of the Mountains, (Asheville, Advocate Publishing Company, 1924), Tryon has also been described as "A Journey to the Fortress of Dreams," and Elia W. Peattie waxed rhapsodic about the area in the famous poem "These Be the Mountains That Comfort Me." Most who came found the life in the small mountain village to be a haven from the industrialization of the large cities and the temperate climate an ideal location for those recouperating from illness. Many well-known summer residents stayed to make Tryon their permanent home. Sidney Lanier, was one such famous resident. Another famous resident of Tryon was Margaret Warner Morley, whose small nature books for children offered a modest introduction to sex-education and captured the imagination of adults. Her most famous book, a descriptive account of life In the Carolina Mountains was centered about a small idyllic village she called "Traumfest" --- her pseudonym for Tryon. It remains one of the most sensitive accounts of life in the western North Carolina mountains. | ||
