DC 15 QUALIFIERS <tag> DESCRIPTION

Title

Alternate title <title> The name given to the item. Can be a book, work of art, manuscript collection, map, object, etc. If item is unnamed give the item a descriptive title.

Omit articles such as 'the', 'a', 'an', etc. which often come at the beginning of a descriptive title.

Creator

  <creator> The person or organization responsible for the creation of the object, collection, item. This includes the artist, writer, designer, photographer, cartographer, etc. For collections, give the name of the creating institution. For items, give the actual name of creator, if known, i.e. E.W. Ball. 

Last name first, first name last.

Identifier

  <identifier> A number or alpha-numeric, or other identifier that is unique to the object. This may be the accession number, record number, ISBN number, or the URL. Note that URL's can change. Accession #'s generally do not. Generally the collection level record will be given a URL identifier, while the item record will have a unique identifier.

Call number for library items can appear in an additional administrative field.  

Subject

  <subject> Key words and key descriptive terms generally derived from LC Subject Headings, Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT), or similar standard "controlled" vocabularies. Can include two separate lists: one for keywords and one for controlled vocabularies. [AAM has no subject fields at present.]

Use proper names, Consult AACR2 or other authorities.

Description

Table of contents

Abstract

<description> Description may be the subject matter, the physical properties, or an abstract of the content. 

Examples: 'Journal of a Trout Fisherman', 'Round Carved-Poplar Bowl', 'This manuscript contains records of the textile mills in Gaston County'.

Publisher

  <publisher> If material is formally published, the name of the publisher. Or, the name of the repository where material resides. At the collection level publisher is institution. At the item level, leave blank if not known. Add, if known, i.e. "Asheville Postcard Company".

Contributor

  <contributor> Person or organization that contributed to the assembly, organization, fabrication, illustration, translation, editing, or other secondary role. Generally used at the collection level. Use at item level, if known. Otherwise, leave blank.

<date> See qualifiers. Generally the date of creation of the electronic item.

When entering date, use YYYY-MM-DD for the exact date (2000-10-05 for October 5, 2000). Also preferred: ca. 1952 and 1952/53. (See W3C-DTF)

<type> Refers to the general format of the item, such as sound recording, image, physical object, collection, or text, etc.

See the Dublin Core TYPES list for a complete list of types and their descriptions.

<format> The dimensions, number of pages, number of objects, length of audio tape, cubic feet, linear ft., photographic process, negative, glass plate, etc. 
Condition*     *Non-DC field. Added field that describes the condition of the object and any preservation concerns.

  <source> Refers to the original when object has been digitized. Includes the accession number. 

In EAD refers to the acquisition information ,<acquinfo>

Language

  <language> The language of written objects. A two-character code based on the Internet Engineering Task Froce standard RFC 1766 is standard. However, writing out "English" is preferred by grant partners.

Examples: en=english, es=Spanish,  etc. For languages not included in the codes, use the full name.

<relation> A series of discretionary fields that may be used to suit the collection or institution. The relation to other objects. Can include the URL. Specify the chosen qualifier(s)

<coverage> Geographic location and/or the time  period.

Use standardized proper names derived from the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names or the LC Subject Headings, or other standardized references. Enter time periods as 1942-12-10 and 1952/1953.

Rights

  <rights> Describe the rights to access the item or collection. 

Example: "Permission to use the photograph must be obtained from the photographer ";"Item is copyrighted until 2010"; In the public domain'; 'Must cite the University of NC at XXX, ; Any display, publication, or public use must credit the D.H. Ramsey Library, Special Collections, University of North Carolina at Asheville. Copyright retained by the creators of certain items in the collection, or their descendents, as stipulated by United States copyright law, etc.
