David Edward Guloien – The Dickinson Press


David Edward Guloien, 81, died Friday, June 10, 2022, in Penn Highlands Brookville, Pennsylvania after a long battle with dementia. He was born on November 14, 1940 in Willmar, Minnesota to Dr. Hansel and Luverne Roche Guloien. Dave graduated from Dickinson High School in Dickinson, North Dakota, and received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. After graduating, Dave worked in San Francisco, California, where he met Sally Mitchell, whom he later married on January 28, 1967, in Emporium, Pennsylvania at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Prior to moving to Emporium, Dave and Sally lived in San Francisco for 9 years. After settling in Emporium, Dave became an active member of the community and worked as a State Farm agent for over 25 years. He served as Principal of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and Past President of the Rotary Emporium, where he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. Dave also served as President and Treasurer of the Emporium Country Club, was a member of the Cameron County School Board, and served on the board of the George A. and Margaret Mee Charitable Foundation and the Emporium Foundation. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing and watching golf, supporting the 49’ers, traveling across the country, especially to his hometown of North Dakota, hiking, and a good martini. Dave was a devoted husband and loving father. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sally Mitchell Guloien of Emporium; daughter, Jeanmare Holjencin (Tom) of Charleston, South Carolina; son, Eirik Guloien (Brittany) of Sumter, South Carolina; granddaughters, Lucie, Amelia and Sally Holjencin and grandsons Kynkade and Beau Guloien; sisters, Karin Ehli (Jim) and Christine Zander (Ken) of Dickinson, North Dakota and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his son, David Edward Guloien Jr.; his sisters, Jean Guloien and Mary Guloien Davis. The funeral service was held Friday, June 17 at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 144 West Fourth Street at Emporium, presided over by Father Matthew Ryan. A private burial was held at Newton Cemetery, Emporium, Pennsylvania after the service. Memorials may be made in memory of Dave Guloien at Emmanuel Episcopal Church and Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library in Emporium, PA.
